ASTM A36 Steel Plate

Characteristics

ASTM A36 plate is a low carbon steel that exhibits good strength coupled with formability. It is easy to machine and fabricate and can be securely welded. A36 is a common structural steel plate that can be galvanized to provide increased corrosion resistance.

Applications

A36 plate can be used for a wide range of applications, depending on the thickness and corrosion resistance of the alloy.  Some of the products manufactured using A36 structural steel plate are:

  • Buildings, including pre-fabricated buildings, warehouses, industrial and commercial structures
  • Cabinets, enclosures and housings
  • Pipe and tubing

A572-50 Plate

Characteristics

ASTM A572-50 plate has a higher yield and tensile strength than A36 plate, combined with a lower weight. A572-50 plate is ductile and easy to form. It can be successfully machined with the appropriate techniques and is easy to weld. It is a high strength low alloy (HSLA) columbium-vanadium steel and is available in grades 42, 55, 60 and 65.

Applications

A572-50 plate is used for bridge plates, gusset plates, base plates and structural steel stiffeners.

Sizes

3/16” – 4” (Greater than 4” thru 6” would be  A572Grade 42)
